LA Mayor is First Black Woman to Receive the Olympic Flag at the Closing Ceremony

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass made history at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games by becoming the first Black woman to receive the Olympic flag during the closing ceremony. Mayor Bass accepted the flag from Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, who is the first woman to serve as Paris’s mayor. Joining Bass was Simone Biles, the most decorated gymnast in U.S. history. This handover marks Los Angeles as the next host city for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Mayor Bass expressed the significance of this moment, emphasizing the inspiration it offers to girls worldwide. She also highlighted her commitment to ensuring that the 2028 Games will benefit local small businesses, create jobs, and lead to lasting improvements in Los Angeles. The city’s Department of Recreation and Parks will continue to engage youth through the PlayLA Youth and Adaptive Youth Sports Programs, bringing the excitement of the Games to Los Angeles.
