Kathy Hochul To Be New York State’s 1st Female Governor On Aug. 24th

Written by on August 12, 2021

Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul will become the state’s first female governor on Aug. 24th. This comes after New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo resigned. But if the name Kathy Hochul sound familiar? That’s because she is from Western New York.

After serving as Erie County’s clerk, Hochul made national headlines in 2011 when she ran for Congress in a hotly-contested special election. Republican Chris Lee had just resigned in shame and she was initially seen as a long shot in the Republican-leaning district. But a three-way race against a Republican assemblywoman and a millionaire Tea Party candidate changed the electoral math.

And in June 2011, Hochul was sworn in to serve in the House of Representatives. Less than two years later, Hochul fell just short of reelection. Republican Chris Collins would take over that seat and later find a bed in federal prison for insider trading before former President Donald Trump pardoned him weeks before leaving office.

Hochul, an attorney, would return to the private sector until 2014. Former Rochester Mayor and Lt. Gov. Bob Duffy – who campaigned for Hochul during her Congressional run – was stepping down. Cuomo picked Hochul to join him as his running mate in his bid for reelection. The Cuomo-Hochul ticket was successful and the duo won again in 2018..

The 62-year-old Hochul is a graduate of Syracuse University and a mother of two. Her husband, William Hochul, is the former U.S. Attorney in Western New York. When not traveling the state, she still calls the Buffalo suburbs home. Click Here To Read More.
