Kamala Harris Will Be Sworn In By The First U.S. Latina Supreme Court Justice

The Madam Vice President Elect Kamala Harris will be sworn in today by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the first Latina U.S. Supreme Court Justice.
Harris has chosen to be sworn in using two bibles: the first belonged to her childhood neighbor who was like her second mother. The second bible belonged to the late civil rights activist and the first Black Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall.
In her 2019 memoir, The Truth We Hold, Harris wrote:
“Some of my greatest heroes were lawyers: Thurgood Marshall, Charles Hamilton Houston, Constance Baker Motley—giants of the civil rights movement. I cared a lot about fairness, and I saw the law as a tool that can help make things fair.”
