Justice Department Ends Longstanding Louisiana School Desegregation Order

The Justice Department has formally ended a 1966 school desegregation order in Louisiana’s Plaquemines Parish, signaling what officials suggest may be the beginning of a broader rollback of similar Civil Rights-era court mandates. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon praised the move as correcting a “historical wrong.” While state officials argue the measures are outdated, civil rights groups warn this could reverse decades of racial integration progress. More than 130 districts, primarily in the South, remain under desegregation orders. Critics argue lifting these orders can accelerate resegregation and reduce educational equity.
