Judith Jamison, a legendary dancer and former artistic director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, passed away at 81 on November 9, 2024. Born in Philadelphia, Jamison began her dance journey with rigorous training in classical ballet and modern dance, later joining Alvin Ailey’s company in 1965. She quickly became an iconic figure, especially known for her powerful performance in Ailey’s “Cry,” dedicated to Black women.

After Ailey’s passing in 1989, Jamison took over as artistic director, guiding the company until 2011.
