So, last night I took advantage of Half- Priced Tuesdays and finally saw the movie, Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix. In short, it was everything I thought a Joker movie would be; dark and cynical with a dash of comedy and a sprinkling of discomfort.

From the opening credits you were immediately drawn into Arthur Fleck’s struggle. He was an aspiring comedian dealing with a mental illness that often held him back, making him a very sympathetic character from the start. When he wasn’t being bullied or abused, Fleck was often overlooked, or completely disregarded. Watching this man’s slow descent into madness made sense to me, the world was never good to him. I was rooting for Arthur Fleck, I wanted him to finally fight back!

The director, Todd Phillips, did a great job of painting the “bad guy” as the protagonist in my opinion. There were moments where you felt so uncomfortable, it was as if you were living in the moment with the character. Not to mention, Joaquin Phoenix is a beast of an actor, I’ve never been disappointed by him!

I also liked how the movie also tackled real world issues prominent in popular culture and relevant to our everyday lives. Things like mental illness, systematic barriers,  poverty, classism and gun violence were all touched on in this film. If you’re debating on whether or not to see this movie then I suggest you take the chance, you won’t regret it!
