Johnson & Johnson Vaccine on Pause

Written by on April 15, 2021

The single-shot Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine has been put on pause by the FDA due to rare complications. Six women out of the 7 million who have received the vaccine have reported severely rare blood clots that may be linked to the vaccine. Other side effects include a severe headache that does not go away, significant abdominal or leg pain that does not subside, or increasing shortness of breath. If any of these occur, the CDC recommends for you to call your doctor immediately.

If you have received the vaccine over a month ago, health officials say the risk is very low.
The six women, ages 18-48, have developed a cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST). CVST is a clot in the area of the brain that collects and drains oxygen-depleted blood. According to John Hopkins Medicine, “When this happens, blood cells may break and leak blood into the brain tissues, forming a hemorrhage.” The pause on the vaccine will allow the CDC and FDA further investigation on the vaccine.
