Joel Bervell’s Animated Series Promotes Diversity in Medicine

Joel Bervell, a medical student and science communicator, is creating The Doctor Is In, an animated series aimed at inspiring young Black children to pursue careers in medicine. Growing up as a Ghanaian-American, Bervell saw few media figures who looked like him in scientific fields, which drove him to create a show for kids aged 3 to 5 featuring Leland, a young Black boy aspiring to be a doctor. Each episode explores simple medical concepts, empowering kids with knowledge and representation. To fund this project, Bervell has launched a Kickstarter campaign with a $60,000 goal to produce a pilot. Known on TikTok as the “Medical Mythbuster,” Bervell uses his platform to educate about racial disparities in healthcare, and his series aims to further his mission of diversifying the field and inspiring future doctors.
