On Sunday, May 24th Wilbur James “Jimmy” Cobb passed away at 91 from lung cancer at his home in Manhattan.
He was a great American Jazz drummer and part of Miles Davis’ First Great Sextet. Born on January 20, 1929, he was the band’s last surviving member. In his notable career, he played on on other Miles Davis records, such as: Sketches of Spain, Miles Davis at Carnegie Hall, Someday my Prince will Come and In Person Friday and Saturday Nights at the Blackhawk, Complete.
His playing could be described as subtle – he liked to let others shine.
In 2008, Jimmy received the Don Redman Heritage Award, as well as one of the six artists to receive the 2009 National Endowment for the Arts NEA Jazz Masters Award.
He is survived by his wife, Elena Steinberg Cobb and his two daughters Serena and Jamie.
