Black Excellence was the theme this past weekend at the annual Juneteenth Black Excellence Family Festival! The Jam Squad made an appearance to support but most importantly, to have an amazing time.
For those who don’t know, Juneteenth is considered an American holiday and celebrates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in the state of Texas. More importantly however, this day signifies the emancipation of enslaved African Americans throughout the former Confederate States of America. We are celebrating our freedom that began on June 19th, 1865; that is why this festival was so important to attend.
The Juneteenth Black Excellence Family Festival was held this past Saturday on June 15th, and consisted of live entertainment and art and food vendors (which were A M A Z I N G ??). There was also a rite of passage ceremony, scholarship and book giveaways and as well as a special awards presentation.
This was my first time actually attending this festival (I don’t know why I haven’t gone before) and I can honestly say that it was like going to a huge cookout with family. Different people from all over Rochester came out and, even if you may not have known everyone, there was still a commonality between all of us, which was our freedom. That right there was a special realization for me personally.
Everyone was dancing, listening to oldies and just having a great time! I think it’s safe to say, this event was a success. #GreatVibes #Juneteenth ✌?
