Jaleel White Teases ‘Family Matters’ Reboot Based on His Real Life

Written by on March 19, 2025

Jaleel White is working on a Family Matters reboot, but with a unique twist inspired by his own childhood.

In a recent appearance on David Duchovny’s Fail Better podcast, the 48-year-old actor explained his vision for the revival. Unlike past attempts, his concept isn’t centered on an Urkel Jr. Instead, the story follows a child actor in the ‘90s who joins a struggling sitcom and unexpectedly becomes its breakout star. The show would explore the behind-the-scenes struggles of fame, including his public school experiences and parents who know nothing about Hollywood.

White described the series as a 30-minute nostalgic journey, similar in tone to The Wonder Years. He also cited the LeBron James-produced drama Survivor’s Remorse as an influence.

While still in development, White assured fans he’s “cooking” the project with a focus on telling the best story for the times.

The original Family Matters ran from 1989 to 1997, becoming a beloved sitcom classic.
