It’s Official: First Female Governor of New York Kathy Hochul

Written by on August 24, 2021

At midnight today, August 24th, Kathy Hochul made history as the first woman to serve as New York governor after now-former Governor Andrew Cuomo officially stepped down. This Buffalo Native and 62-year-old Democrat were sworn in as the state’s 57th governor during a private ceremony at the state Capitol at 12:01 am, where Janet DiFiore, the state’s chief judge, administered the oath of office. Today, there will be a small ceremonial swearing-in at 10 am, and an inaugural address from Hochul at 3 pm.

Not only is Kathy Hochul the first woman ever to serve as New York State Governor, but Hochul will also be the first governor in a century to serve from outside the New York City metropolitan area and rather in the mansion located in Albany.
