Italy Approves World’s Longest Suspension Bridge to Sicily

Written by on August 9, 2025

Italy has approved a $15.5 billion plan to build the world’s longest suspension bridge connecting the mainland to Sicily via the Strait of Messina. The project, long delayed due to concerns over earthquakes, mafia involvement, and environmental impact, is being revived under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s administration. The 3.7-km bridge will support three car lanes and two rail lines in each direction, reducing crossing times and supporting up to 6,000 cars and 200 trains daily. Authorities also seek to classify the bridge as a defense asset to support NATO spending goals. Environmental groups and academics oppose the plan due to seismic risk and ecological disruption. Construction could begin in late 2025 or early 2026, with completion expected by 2032–33.
