Instagram Adds New Features to Boost Friend Connections
Written by DJ Sight on August 7, 2025
Instagram, owned by Meta, announced three new features aimed at helping users connect more meaningfully with friends, moving beyond just passive content consumption.
1. Location-Sharing Map Feature:
Instagram is introducing a new map tool in its direct messaging (DM) section that lets users share their last active location — similar to Snapchat’s Snap Map. Sharing is optional, and users can control who sees their location. Teen accounts come with parental controls. The feature is now live in the U.S. and select global markets.
2. Reposts for Reels and Feed Posts:
Users can now repost reels and feed posts — a long-requested feature. Instagram says reposts make sense now, as the feed already features recommended content. This addition brings Instagram in line with TikTok, which added a repost feature in 2022.
3. Global Expansion of the “Friends” Tab:
The Friends tab now shows reels that friends have liked, commented on, reposted, or posted. Users can respond via a new “reply bar,” sparking DMs. New privacy controls allow users to hide their interactions or mute content from others.
Instagram Head Adam Mosseri says the updates aim to make the app a more participatory space where users truly connect with those they care about.
