In a first, Biden allows Ukraine to strike Russia with U.S. long-range weapons

President Biden has authorized Ukraine to use U.S.-provided Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) for strikes inside Russia, marking a major shift in U.S. policy. These long-range missiles, capable of reaching 190 miles, could allow Ukraine to target Russian weapons stockpiles, logistics hubs, and airfields, potentially hindering Russia’s military advances. This change comes after months of pressure from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The policy reversal reflects escalating tensions in the war. Until now, the U.S. restricted Ukraine to using the missiles within its own territory, fearing escalation. British officials may follow suit by permitting their Storm Shadow missiles, which contain U.S. components, to be used in Russia.
While the decision provides Ukraine with enhanced strike capabilities, the limited number of missiles may restrict its overall impact. Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of strength over diplomacy in ending the war, particularly after Russia launched one of its largest attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
The move also precedes Donald Trump’s return to the presidency in January, as his administration’s approach to Ukraine remains uncertain. Ukrainian officials hope the new authorization will not be revoked, highlighting the ongoing importance of U.S. support in their fight against Russian aggression.
