Hot-air balloon strikes and collapses radio tower in Albuquerque during festival

Written by on October 13, 2024

A hot-air balloon struck and collapsed a radio tower in Albuquerque, New Mexico, during the city’s annual Balloon Fiesta on Friday. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The balloon, carrying three people, safely landed in a field after hitting the tower, which transmits for radio station KKOB-AM. The incident is under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration. This is the second time a balloon has struck the same tower during the festival, with a similar event occurring in 2004. Earlier in the week, another balloon bumped into a power line, causing a temporary power outage for nearly 13,000 customers. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, now in its 52nd year, attracts large crowds and features over 100 colorful balloons each fall.
