Honeoye Falls-Lima High School is in hot water after claims have surfaced of a student being falsely accused of writing a bomb threat in the school’s bathroom.
The student, who was not identified, says, “I was mad. I was more mad than scared because I knew that I didn’t do it and they were trying to accuse me of it.”
On October 1, 2019, the school suddenly went into lock down after the following message was found written on a bathroom wall in magic marker, “I’m gonna BOMB this school. Just you wait.”
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office investigated the incident and found no bomb, but the student was still accused of writing the message and given a lengthy suspension.
The student’s lawyer, James Cole, says school administrators “rushed to judgment too quickly in an attempt to put an embarrassing incident in the past rather than waiting for a thorough probe by professionals.”
According to the student, she was given the choice to admit to the offense, apologize and receive a shortened five-day suspension, but she refused, standing by her claim of innocence.
According to Cole, “To me, it screams that they were hoping, that she would admit to it. They could close it and be done with it and sealed, and they could move onto the next problem. I would hope every parent in the community would agree, there is nothing worse than a child being accused of something that they didn’t do.”
The student has an upcoming meeting with the Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School District on November 27th, where she plans to appeal the district’s decision. She looks forward to getting an apology and a change in the school’s system out of this situation.
