#BoycottHersheys started trending after a trans woman tweeted her joy in being included in the Her She promotional campaign celebrating women. See how she and the chocolate company responds inside.

Hersheys Canada

March 8th is International Women’s Day. To celebrate the day in Women’s History Month Hersheys Canada released limited edited chocolate bars featuring five Canadian women working to build a better future through their passion, activism, and work in their communities. One of those featured is Fae Johnstone, a trans woman and 2SLGBTQ+ activist.

“Honoured to be featured in this campaign by @Hersheys Canada for #InternationalWomensDay alongside 4 brilliant sisters and change-makers,” Johnstone wrote on Twitter shortly after the “Her for She” campaign was announced by Hershey Canada.

That tweet, now blocked to the public garnered thousands of hateful comments and the start of the #BoycottHersheys Trend on Twitter.

Amy Kremer, the co-founder of Women for Trump, called the campaign was “disgusting”. Other critics proclaimed they would be giving up Hersheys products in response to Fae’s inclusion.

Some alleged that the campaign was offensive to “women” in general. Fae has a message for these folks:

“The reaction to my inclusion as a trans woman in Hersheys Canada’s IWD campaign shows just how far we still have to go in the fight for feminist liberation and trans rights,” she wrote in a Twitter thread discussing the backlash. “I’m not going anywhere. I’m not shutting up. I will always stand up for women and girls, cis and trans.”
