Health: Mental Illness

Kanye was reportedly scheduled to be released from the hospital, but has not yet been released.
A source ‘close’ to Kanye claimed the creative has been experiencing extreme paranoia and depression. Many fans have mocked him, condemned him for his behavior, and have even accused him of insurance fraud.
If this man is truly suffering from a mental illness, it is appalling for people to react to his sickness in this way. We need to reexamine how we look at mental illness especially within the Black community.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, African-Americans are 20 percent more likely to have serious mental health problems than the general population.
Many of us have not been taught how to properly handle mental illnesses because we have been taught that it is a sign of weakness. So we hold things in – become angry, argumentative, and build walls to mask as strength instead of properly dealing with our emotions. We have to change our perspective on mental health. There is strength in vulnerability.
When mental illnesses go untreated it can be detrimental. We have to remove the stigma around mental health. We cannot demonize those that are dealing with things internally. Just because we may not physically see their sickness does not mean they are okay.
If you have someone in your life that may exhibit signs of depression, anxiety, treat with, or any mental illness – seek help. Honestly, sometimes it can be hard to be supportive especially if the person is pushing you away. Try to respond not react.
Be encouraging
Be patient
Be compassionate and loving
