Groveland Correction Officer Found Dead; Family Raises Concerns Over Medical Neglect

David Hilburger, a 53-year-old correction officer at Groveland Correctional Facility, was found dead in his state housing unit after failing to report for duty on April 9. The Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) confirmed he was discovered following a wellness check. While the cause of death remains under investigation, Hilburger’s family alleges he had been feeling unwell but avoided seeking medical care due to fear of retaliation from the facility. A sign previously posted at Groveland warning staff they would be marked AWOL for calling in sick has raised concerns. DOCCS claims the policy was only in place during a strike and has since been rescinded. The New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association (NYSCOPBA) called Hilburger’s death “tragic” and stated they are closely monitoring the investigation. Funeral arrangements are underway, and inquiries have been made to Governor Kathy Hochul’s office for comment.
