Greece Getting License Plate Recognition Cameras
Written by Tariq on December 19, 2024
The Greece Police Department is making significant security upgrades, according to Chief Michael Wood, including installing license plate recognition cameras to track down everything from stolen cars to missing people. Wood said they’re being installed now across the town. “You think of the criminal activity right away,” Wood said. “License plates for stolen cars, for example, or suspect vehicles. You could have a robbery.” “You also have non-criminal type of events, which I think are also extremely important, like Silver Alerts, Amber Alerts,” he continued. The technology is the akin to what is used on the New York State Thruway, snapping a photo of a driver’s license plate for tolls. The upgrades are already seeing real results. Last month, a stolen car at The Mall at Greece Ridge turned into an international incident. According to a statement from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, two men – Venezuelan citizens in the U.S. unlawfully — were taken into custody. They are now at a federal detention facility awaiting deportation hearings. Wood said all of the cameras, about 50, are expected to all be up soon. 13 WHAM found them in major thoroughfares like Ridge Road and Dewey Avenue; Wood did not give out precise locations. The cameras are all funded with via the New York State Law Enforcement Technology grant, and the official announcement will be published in the next town newsletter, along with more details.
