‘Grandparent Scam’ Threatens Rochester’s Senior Citizens

The New York Attorney General has issued a warning regarding a phone scam that is targeting the elderly in Rochester and other communities across the state of New York.
The “Grandparent Scam” is when scammers call elderly people and pretend to be a grandchild who needs money quickly to get out of an emergency situation.
Getting robbed, being arrested for drunk driving or getting stranded from a broken down car are all scenarios that are being used to try and extort money from senior citizens.
The callers will even tell the victim not to call the child’s parents because they don’t want to get in trouble.
Attorney General Letitia James explains:
“Due to COVID-19 restrictions, many grandparents have not seen their grandchildren for months and may be especially susceptible to this common and despicable scam.”
Most of the time these scams go unreported, because the victims are too embarrassed. One of the only ways to stop them is by spreading awareness.
