Written by Andre on January 12, 2021
Governor Andre Cuomo announced a comprehensive package to combat domestic violence in his 2021 State of the State. Governor Cuomo’s package includes a reimagined domestic violence agency. The agency would become the Office to End Domestic Violence and Gender-Based Violence. It would handle partner violence which includes domestic violence and sexual violence, in a survivor-centered and comprehensive manner.
Governor Cuomo said in his address “One of the most horrific results of this pandemic has been the stark rise in cases of domestic and gender-based violence.”
Another part of the package proposes allowing courts to have abusers pay for damages. That would include the housing unit, moving expenses, and any other costs due to damages by the abuser.
There is also a new program underway for a 24/7 chat text line for individuals experiencing domestic and sexual violence.
