Written by on September 9, 2024

Governor Kathy Hochul delivered a public safety update in Rochester, focusing on efforts to combat crime in the city. While she highlighted significant progress in reducing crime in 2024—including a 40% drop in shootings and a 58% decrease in car thefts—recent violent incidents have raised concerns. Hochul referenced a series of tragedies, including a homicide investigation, a fatal crash involving a stolen car, and a shooting at Maplewood Park that killed two and injured five.

To address these issues, Hochul announced the deployment of up to 25 New York State Troopers to assist the Rochester Police Department with investigations and patrols. Additionally, $24 million in state funding will be allocated to Rochester-area police agencies for technological upgrades, such as body-worn cameras and drones. Community-based anti-violence programs will also receive funding to continue their efforts in crime prevention. Hochul emphasized the importance of improving law enforcement capacity, technology, and crime prevention initiatives to keep Rochester safe.
