Yesterday, in Sacramento California, The Golden State Killer was sentenced to life in prison without parole after pleading guilty to to 13 counts of murder and 13 counts of kidnapping with robbery, across 6 counties in California between 1960 – 1970.

Joseph DeAngelo, 74, was a former police officer and admitted to the crimes back in June.

Law enforcement officials used DNA from an untested rape kit that was more than 40 years old in a new process developed in 2018.

The tactic allows officials to build a family tree from publicly accessible records and genealogy websites until they narrowed it down to a single suspect.

74 year old Jane Carson-Sandler, one of his surviving victims, was present during the sentencing and spoke to her assailant, saying:

“You are finally going to prison and will remain there until you die”
