Gladys Knight, 81, has responded to allegations from her son, Shanga Hankerson, who claims her husband William Macdowell is financially and mentally abusive and is forcing her to continue performing despite alleged health concerns. Hankerson cited incidents suggesting cognitive decline and filed a complaint with North Carolina’s Department of Human Services. However, Knight told PEOPLE she is “healthy and happy,” enjoying time with family and looking forward to returning to The Queens Tour with Chaka Khan, Patti LaBelle, and Stephanie Mills. Her team dismissed Hankerson’s accusations as unfounded and said she hasn’t toured since June, with shows resuming in September. Knight’s publicist indicated possible legal action is being reviewed. While Hankerson insists his motives are not financial, Knight remains focused on her music and fanbase, reiterating her excitement to be back on stage and dispelling rumors about her well-being.
