Written by on June 28, 2024

Elementary students from West Irondequoit Central School District organized the first-ever beach cleanup at Durand Eastman Beach, inspiring the community to combat littering. More than 50 students and their families collected items like drink cans, shattered glass bottles, a television, and a standing house fan.

Co-organizer Greyson Gilbert highlighted the importance of a clean environment, stating, “This isn’t just one person’s world. We should pick up more than we drop.” Fellow organizer Daniel Johnson, who frequently visits the beach, noticed increasing pollution and felt compelled to act.

The students, part of Jennifer Gottfried’s 4th grade class, known as the Gottfried Crew, have been involved in various community projects. Their efforts have gained attention, including from Senator Samra Brouk. The beach cleanup marks the peak of their environmental activism.

Gottfried expressed pride in her students, saying, “They really know that their voice can be heard and that they can make change.” The students hope their initiative encourages others to clean up their neighborhoods, proving that if fourth graders can take action, so can everyone else.
