Free Tax Filing Program With The IRS Available In NYS

Written by on April 12, 2024

A free online tax filing program from the Internal Revenue Service is available Direct File. The U.S. Department of the Treasury estimated that the program could cover about one-third of federal tax returns, or 19 million taxpayers. New York State is  making it easier for residents to file their taxes for free, in partnership with the civic tech nonprofit Code for America. After completing the federal return through Direct File, New Yorkers can export their information to the state’s new program. From there, you can file your state return within minutes.

New Yorkers are eligible to use the Direct File pilot if they:

  • Live in New York year-round and don’t have income from another state.
  • Their only income sources are wages, Social Security benefits, unemployment benefits, or up to $1,500 of interest.
  • They want to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, or Credit for Other Dependents.
  • They only plan to claim the standard deduction or deductions for student loan interest and educator expenses.
