Former Basketball Star Jarred Shaw Faces Death Penalty in Indonesia for Drug Smuggling

Former college basketball player Jarred Shaw has been arrested in Indonesia for allegedly smuggling cannabis-infused edibles into the country. Shaw, 34, was detained on May 7 in Tangerang after police seized 132 pieces of cannabis candy weighing nearly 870 grams. He claimed the products were intended for fellow players, but authorities say the incident stems from a suspicious package received from Thailand. Indonesia, known for its zero-tolerance drug laws, imposes life imprisonment or the death penalty for trafficking. Shaw, who formerly played for the Tangerang Hawks, has since been fired and banned from the Indonesian Basketball League. A video of the arrest shows him resisting officers. His case highlights Indonesia’s strict enforcement and the dangers faced by foreigners unaware—or dismissive—of local drug regulations.
