Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Craig Gaines died from medical complications tied to a broken leg suffered when players inadvertently crashed into him on the sideline during the Sept. 6 Florida A&M vs. Florida Atlantic game in Boca Raton. Gaines initially “shook off” the hit and returned to duty, but later deteriorated at home on Sept. 19 and could not be saved despite emergency efforts. A 2008 FHP graduate and U.S. Navy veteran, Gaines previously served with the Havana Police Department and the Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office. He was 58, married for 28 years, and a father of three. Tributes from Florida Atlantic and coaching figures—including heartfelt posts from Willie Simmons and James Colzie III—honored Gaines’s service and steadfast presence on the sidelines over years of games.
