Florida Racks Up Over 11,000 New COVID-19 Cases In One Day

On Friday, over 11,000 new cases of COVID-19 infections were reported in Florida, breaking every record for new cases.
The new dataset brings the number of infections in the sunshine state to over 190,000 cases.
85,000 people were tested Friday and 14% of those came back positive. State officials are not optimistic about what the numbers will look like after the July 4th holiday weekend.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez has closed beaches and set up a curfew for the weekend, closing the city from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Police will be checking in on local businesses, making sure that health guidelines are being enforced. The Mayor also decided to close entertainment venues like movie theaters, casinos and strip clubs — one month after they were allowed to reopen.
While Mayor Gimenez is taking steps to curb the spike, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis pushed back on closing procedures. During a press release, he said:
“We’re not going back, closing things. I don’t think that that’s really what’s driving it, people going to a business is not what’s driving it.”
