Florida Mayor Claims He Was Strong-Armed into Signing ICE Cooperation Deal

Written by on August 8, 2025

Orange County, Florida Mayor Jerry Demings announced he signed a cooperation agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) “under protest and in extreme duress,” citing pressure from Governor Ron DeSantis and Attorney General James Uthmeier.

Demings said state officials threatened to suspend him and the entire county commission if they didn’t comply.

The agreement allows ICE to use local law enforcement to detain and transport suspected immigration violators.

While Orange County has no sanctuary policies, Demings raised concerns over staffing and budget impacts.

The county commission will vote on the agreement later this week.
