“Fish Doorbell” Livestream Goes Viral
Written by Site Hub on March 26, 2025
In Utrecht, Netherlands, an innovative and unexpectedly popular livestream called the “fish doorbell” allows viewers to help local fish complete their spring migration. The livestream shows underwater footage from the Weerdsluis river lock, and when viewers spot fish like pike or bream, they can press a button that notifies water authorities to open the lock. This community-driven ecological initiative is now in its fifth year and has attracted millions of viewers worldwide. Much of the footage is slow-moving or uneventful, but fans say the simplicity is part of its charm. Developed by ecologist Mark van Heukelum, the project prevents fish from being stranded and vulnerable to predators. City ecologist Anna Nijs adds that people enjoy both the relaxing pace of the stream and the sense of purpose it provides. With its blend of environmental awareness, citizen science, and slow TV, the fish doorbell continues to gain global popularity.
