First-Time Homebuyers “Buy the Block” Program Applications Are Open Now

First-time homebuyers struggling to find an affordable house in Rochester now have a new resource to help. Applications are open for the “Buy the Block” program. The initiative began as a way to get new homes built in under-invested areas of the city. The houses are then sold to qualified, first-time homebuyers who will spend no more than 30% of their income on housing. Officials said the first round of the program was very successful and generated lots of interest from homebuyers. Organizers said the second phase of the project offers more. There are currently 32 homes available to buyers as part of this program. Those homes are slated to be built in southwest Rochester over the coming year. They are sold on a first-to-qualify, first-to-buy basis. Applicants are required to have a household income of 80% of the Area Median Income. The houses range in price from $99,000 to $155,000.
