Firefighter Suing City of Rochester for Racially Hostile and Discriminatory Work Environment

Written by on May 26, 2023

A 15-year-old veteran of the Rochester Fire Department Jerrod Jones is suing the City of Rochester, the department, and a former fire captain for a racially hostile and discriminatory work environment.

Last summer, Jones came forward after his captain at the time forced him and two other on-duty firefighters to attend a private party that mocked Juneteenth and degraded local politicians.

Jones is seeking $5 million in damages after witnessing racist behavior toward others while on the job and witnessing intentional demolition of property in Black neighborhoods by some firefighters for what they joked were training purposes.
