Final U.S. Military Plane Has Left Afghanistan

Written by on August 31, 2021

Yesterday, the last U.S. plane departed Afghanistan’s Hamid Karzai International Airport. This final plane leaving Afghanistan signifies the end of America’s longest war and leaving the country’s future in disarray and uncertainty under Taliban rule. In a statement from last night, President Biden praised the military for “their execution of the dangerous retrograde from Afghanistan as scheduled.” President Biden is set to address the nation on the U.S. decision to withdraw from Afghanistan today.

The final days of the U.S. in Afghanistan were filled with chaos. Throughout the 20 year-long war, more than 2,400 U.S. troops lost their lives in Afghanistan, including the 13 who were killed in a suicide attack near the Kabul airport last week. Tens of thousands of Afghans were also killed in the war. Those who survived in Afghanistan now face an uncertain future under the Taliban, the group that provided a safe haven to Al Qaeda and that the U.S. set out after 9/11.
