The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, recently passed by the House, would require proof of U.S. citizenship to register for federal elections and is now headed to the Senate.
Supporters claim it would help prevent voter fraud, but critics, including Congressman Joe Morelle and League of Women Voters President Barbara Grosh, argue it would make voting more difficult especially for women who have changed their names.
A judge has already blocked parts of the act from being implemented.
