Family in Albany (Georgia) win shelter-in-place contest with rap video

Last week, the City of Albany in Georgia announced that they had chosen a winner for their Shelter In Place Community Video Contest. City officials had hoped that locals might produce content that would promote the idea that everyone must shelter in place. A local family, the McCrary’s, won after their children sang and recorded a rap song filled with instructions for sheltering in place.
In an interview with WALB 10 News, a local television station, family patriarch Leonard McCrary explained: “It is an amazing feeling to know that something you thought of that you put to paper and you made it come to life… Hopefully it is something that can bring some joy to somebody during this time or maybe inform them or educate them, especially the kids.”
His son Trent, who appears in the video, explained that creating this video was important to him because COVID-19 has touched him personally. The grandfather of a close friend passed away because of symptoms from the virus: “Just encouraging people to stay home and prevent the spread. It really just helps me feel more at ease with myself.”
The Albany police department posted the video on YouTube on Friday, April 3, with the following message: “Congratulations to The McCrary Family! They are the winners of the City of Albany Shelter In Place Community Video Contest! Thank you @LeonardChanceMcCrary your time and sharing your children’s talent. Now, let’s have some fun because all of us could use a little break.”
