Families of Buffalo Tops Victims File Lawsuit Against Online Platforms

Written by on July 13, 2023

Families of the victims involved in the mass shooting at the Tops supermarket in Buffalo last year have come forward with a lawsuit stating that websites like social media and gun sellers helped cause the attack. According to the lawsuit, the families said the shooter was influenced by hateful lies he found online.

“They helped make it happen, even if they don’t say so,” lawyer Ben Crump said when talking about the lawsuit that’s 171 pages long.

The lawsuit mentions several websites like Meta (Facebook and Instagram), Amazon, Google, and Discord. It also names the company that made the shooter’s body armor and the stores that sold him guns.

“Payton Gendron was the one who shot, but he did that after spending years on addictive websites, which made him extreme and pushed him to buy guns and body armor to do this horrible attack,” the lawsuit said.
The lawsuit seeks unspecified financial damages. Gendron’s surviving victims and relatives of those killed said they also want changes in how the companies operate.
