ESPN Cancels Spike Lee’s Colin Kaepernick Docuseries Due to Creative Differences

Written by on August 19, 2025

A highly anticipated ESPN Films documentary on Colin Kaepernick, directed by Spike Lee, will not air due to unresolved creative differences. Titled “Da Saga of Colin Kaepernick,” the project was meant to explore Kaepernick’s journey from NFL quarterback to civil rights activist. The collaboration between ESPN, Lee, and Kaepernick dissolved, with Lee citing a nondisclosure agreement preventing further comment. Disagreements reportedly emerged between Kaepernick and Lee over the direction of the project. ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro has allowed the filmmakers to shop the series to other networks. Kaepernick, who became a household name for kneeling during the national anthem in 2016 to protest racial injustice, previously settled a collusion case with the NFL in 2019. The shelving of the documentary adds another chapter to the ongoing debate surrounding Kaepernick’s legacy, media portrayals of activism, and creative control in storytelling.
