Elected NY Officials Want a Say in Closing of Six Correctional Facilities

Recently, New York State had made the decision to close six correctional facilities. Now, some of the elected officials have a concern about the impact of each closure and would like to be a part of the choosing process. Officials are seeking to have a conversation with state leaders to address their disappointment that they weren’t included in the decision to shut down certain facilities.
Over the weekend, officials gathered outside Willard Correctional Facility, which is set to close in Spring of 2022. Senator Pam Helming spoke on their want to have a say in this closure: “You cannot make these local decisions without involving local people. We won’t let our employees and the families be left behind, we can’t let this facility go dormant and we can’t make this community suffer through yet one more closure.”
