Economic Blackout: Nationwide Boycott Aims to Protest Corporate and Political Influence
Written by Site Hub on February 28, 2025
A grassroots movement, The People’s Union USA, has organized a 24-hour “Economic Blackout” on Friday, February 28, urging Americans to stop all spending for a day to protest corporate and political influence. Participants are encouraged to avoid shopping, dining, and fueling up, especially at major retailers like Walmart and Amazon.
The blackout aligns with growing boycotts against Target, led by labor and faith-based groups, after the company scaled back its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network also plans future corporate boycotts.
Experts suggest the blackout may cause a short-term drop in retail sales but is unlikely to have lasting effects. However, past boycotts—such as against Bud Light and Target—have shown some companies adjust policies in response to consumer pressure.
The movement plans additional boycotts on March 28, aiming to hold corporations accountable and push for economic justice.
