NBA legend Dwyane Wade, 43, has revealed that a routine checkup led to a shocking cancer diagnosis and life-saving surgery.
On the Jan. 30 episode of his podcast, The Why With Dwyane Wade, the retired basketball star shared that he hadn’t been keeping up with medical exams since leaving the NBA in 2019. It was only after his father underwent surgery that Wade decided to get a full-body scan—a decision that may have saved his life.
Doctors discovered a tumor on his right kidney that couldn’t be biopsied, prompting them to recommend immediate surgery. Wade underwent the procedure on Dec. 18, 2023, and later learned that the tumor was cancerous.
“Thank God that I did do the surgery,” Wade said. “Because the tumor was cancerous.” He described the experience as the weakest he had ever felt, as his family saw him in a vulnerable state for the first time.
Now, Wade says the ordeal has reshaped his perspective on health, emphasizing the importance of regular checkups and early detection.
