(Dum Dumb of the Day) Former Texas 911 Operator Sentenced for Hanging Up on Emergency Calls, Disconnected Thousands

Written by on April 2, 2025

A former 911 operator in Texas, Crenshanda Williams, has been sentenced to 10 days in jail and 18 months of probation for hanging up on emergency calls.

Williams, 44, was found guilty of interference with emergency telephone calls after reportedly disconnecting thousands of calls in Houston over a year.

Assistant District Attorney Lauren Reeder emphasized the breach of public trust, noting that the calls she terminated included serious incidents like robberies and murders.

Williams claimed she hung up because she didn’t want to talk at those times, believing the calls would be transferred to another operator.

Her attorney argued she was not criminally responsible, stating she did not realize she was disconnecting the calls.

In addition to her sentence, Williams must attend a decision-making class and write an apology letter.
