During a performance of Drake’s song “Headlines,” various news items were displayed on the stage screens. A notable headline picked up by a fan’s TikTok footage read, “The overhyped and over-awarded hit song ‘This Is America’ was originally a diss track targeting Drake.”
This swipe at Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino’s 2018 chart-topper was a reaction to Glover’s interview with GQ in April, during which he confessed that “This Is America” was initially conceived as a joke, specifically aimed at Drake.
Glover shared; “I had the idea three years before. I told [director] Hiro [Murai] the idea, and he’s like, ‘I really want to do that.’ The idea for the song started as a joke. To be completely honest, ‘This is America’ — that was all we had was that line. It started as a Drake diss, to be honest, as like a funny way of doing it. But then I was like, this s- sounds kind of hard though. So I was like, let me play with it.”
