Walt Disney Animation Studios has officially canceled the highly anticipated Princess Tiana series for Disney+. The decision comes as the studio scales back longform content production for streaming and implements layoffs at its Vancouver studio, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Originally announced in December 2020, the Tiana series was set to continue the story of Disney’s first Black princess, voiced by Anika Noni Rose, from the 2009 film The Princess and the Frog. However, mounting production costs and creative team changes reportedly led to its cancellation.

Despite shelving the series, Disney is developing a short-form project featuring Princess Tiana, with Joyce Sherri and Steve Anderson as co-directors.

Fans of Tiana can still experience her legacy at Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, which replaced Splash Mountain at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom and Disneyland in 2024.
