Deputy Dominic Kujawa of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has been indicted for allegedly allowing fights between inmates at the Monroe County Jail. According to Sheriff Todd Baxter, Kujawa not only failed to intervene in violent altercations but also enabled them. An internal investigation was launched after an incarcerated individual reported the misconduct. Kujawa now faces charges of second-degree assault and official misconduct and is in the process of being terminated. Two other deputies remain suspended and one has resigned as the investigation continues. Sheriff Baxter emphasized the challenges of working in a jail environment but stated that criminal behavior by law enforcement will not be tolerated. The department is strengthening training programs for new deputies and reaffirming its zero-tolerance stance on abuse. Kujawa had been with the sheriff’s office since 2023.
