Democrat & Chronicle Walkout Protest
Written by Site Hub on June 6, 2023
Yesterday, workers walked off the job at the Democrat & Chronicle newspaper. Reporters and photographers joined Gannett employees across the country in a one-day walkout to protest slow-moving contract talks.
Justin Murphy, vice chair of the Newspaper Guild of Rochester, stated: “We’re hoping to dramatize to the shareholders the need for an immediate change in the direction of the company. We, the employees, the journalists who do the actual work that keeps this company afloat, we have lost all confidence in (Gannett CEO) Mike Reed as the leader. He’s proven again and again that the only idea that he has to lead this company is to cut and to cut and to cut again and minimize expenses wherever he can.”
@DandC and Canandaigua Daily Messenger reporters, photographers and planners are among the journalists walking off the job to day to protest the mismanagement of Mike Reed. Thread.👇 https://t.co/JrFpaoC84S
