DEC Warns New Yorkers to Avoid Coyote Conflicts as Spring Nears
Written by Site Hub on March 4, 2025
With spring approaching, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is reminding residents to steer clear of coyotes, as they may become territorial and protective during pup-rearing season.
While coyotes generally avoid human contact, conflicts can arise if they lose their fear of people—especially if they associate humans with food sources like garbage or pet food. Officials urge residents to contact the DEC or local police if coyotes exhibit bold behavior, appear frequently near homes, or show little fear of humans.
Tips to Avoid Coyote Conflicts:
- Never feed coyotes or leave food outside, including pet food and garbage.
- Remove brush and tall grass to eliminate hiding spots.
- Keep pets indoors or supervised, especially at dusk and night.
- Fence yards securely, ensuring fences extend underground to prevent digging.
If you encounter a coyote, make yourself look larger, make noise, and throw objects to scare it away.
By taking these precautions, residents can reduce the risk of coyote encounters and help keep both people and wildlife safe.
