DEC Urges Caution as Spring Approaches: Protect Yourself and Pets from Coyotes

Written by on March 3, 2025

As spring approaches, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is advising residents to be cautious of coyotes.

Typically avoiding human contact, coyotes can become more territorial during pup-rearing season, increasing the likelihood of conflicts with people and pets if they feel threatened.

The DEC warns that if coyotes associate food sources—like garbage or pet food—with humans, they may lose their natural fear, leading to more encounters.

While occasional sightings aren’t usually concerning, bold behavior or daytime activity near homes should be reported to the Regional DEC Wildlife Office or local police.

To minimize risks, the DEC recommends the following:

  • Do not allow coyotes to approach people or pets.

  • Never feed coyotes or leave food outside.

  • Feed pets indoors and secure garbage to prevent access.

  • Enclose compost piles and limit birdseed, as concentrations of birds and rodents can attract coyotes.

By taking these precautions, residents can help protect themselves and their neighborhoods from potential conflicts with coyotes.
